Film recommendation: the Szer

Are you also concerned about the passage of time? Are you bothered by the signs of ageing or do you see it as a natural process?

How far would you go to get your youth back?

I went to the cinema again and once again I was not disappointed!

The Agent (2024) – A harrowing body horror that explores the dark side of obsession with youth and beauty.

The story centres on Elisabeth Sparkle – yes Sparkle (Demi Moore), who feels excluded and useless in the entertainment industry as she ages.

Elisabeth was once a celebrated Hollywood movie star who later hosted a long-running aerobics television show. But on her 50th birthday, her asshole producer Harvey fired her from the show because of her age.

In her desperation, Elisabeth tries a mysterious potion that allows her to create a younger, more perfect version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley. Of course, Margaret is much younger, her buttocks firmer, her skin flawless and her energy boundless. She is even coveted by men and even TV decision makers.

With her new, improved self, Elisabeth will once again experience the attention and recognition she received in her youth. But as the drug takes over, she begins to lose her old self, becoming increasingly alienated from her own life in the process.

… and of course the old song, you always want more.

Using the drug has serious consequences and Elisabeth has to face the consequences of her choices.

Why do I recommend it?

The film’s bold and raw visual style is stunning, and the disgusting body horror elements convey a deeper social message about beauty ideals and self-acceptance. Not very slick, but at least it’s real!

Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley give outstanding performances, portraying the characters’ inner struggles and transformations with authenticity and flesh and blood.

If you like dark, thought-provoking stories that offer a critique of social norms alongside your nachos, then The Agent is an unmissable experience for you. (then don’t scold me for the ending) Remember that the director built on the 1986 film The Fly and you won’t be so sick to your stomach, you’ll stay in your coke!
